The Heidelberg Leader recently reported that the Heidelberg RSL sub branch building has been demolished. The local club was founded in 1919 by World War One veterans. A report in The Age last year acknowledged that the Club was no longer financially stable, partly due to the financial commitment of maintaining pokies and that its work in looking after the welfare of ex-soldiers was "done". Soon after this announcement an online petition was established to save the Club but this was apparently unsuccessful.
The demise is particularly poignant as the Anzac centenary is being acknowledged and we approach the centenary of the Gallipoli landings this April.
