Hospital history

The Preston and Community Hospital, known as PANCH opened in Preston in 1960. In 1998 the Hospital closed and services were transferred to the new Northern Hospital in Epping.
The meticulous creation of this paddle boat was by a patient of the former Preston and Northcote Community Hospital sometime between 1963 and 1993. The artistic patient was in hospital for an extended period of time, and making this boat was an example of activities patients would do to pass time and help keep active. Unfortunately, the identity of the artist is no longer known, however he did gift the model boat to the PANCH Social Work department, as he had a lot of contact with the social work team during his stay. The boat has remained part of the Social Work department at The Northern Hospital often referred to as a reminder of the positive relationship between patients and health care professionals.
