Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park

A concept to guide the Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park Master Plan is currently being prepared with all participating park stakeholders. It also inlcudes input from the community from a survey which is now closed.

Eltham District Historical Society – 2018 Community Group of the Year

Nillumbik Shire Council this week recognised the work of the Eltham District Historical Society by awarding it the 2018 Community Group of the Year.  It was awarded at the Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony in Eltham on 26th January 2018.

Eltham District Historical Society President Jim Connor said: ‘I am very pleased to accept this award on behalf of all members, past and present, who have contributed to our historical society, since it was established in 1967. Our society appreciates this recognition, especially as it follows the celebration of our 50th anniversary in 2017. Each of the significant milestones and achievements over the last 50 years have been the result of consistent efforts by dedicated and passionate believers in our local history, intent on encouraging the recognition and preservation of our valuable historical records representing activities and events that have occurred in the Eltham area. Receipt of this award is another page in the history of the Eltham District Historical Society. Stories of history we tell not only shape our past, they shape our future as well.  We look forward to being an active part of Nillumbik’s future.’

New Nillumbik Heritage Guide

Are you a resident or neighbour of the Shire of Nillumbik? It has never been easier to explore the history of where you live with the new Nillumbik heritage guide which has been published by the Shire.
Pick up this handy, well set out and illustrated booklet which highlights important sites within the Shire. Four maps identify the location of the sites in different areas. These maps can be used as the basis for self- guided tours. Sites of interest include cemeteries, historic houses and museums and memorials.
The Shire has an active community of volunteers who work hard to preserve our local stories. Various groups are listed together with their websites.
Further information can also be found in our local history collections at Eltham and Diamond Valley Libraries, in addition to our website and Wikinorthia.
Copies of this free booklet can be picked up from the Shire of Nillumbik, Eltham and Diamond Valley Libraries and local history groups throughout the Shire.

Preserving and sharing local history

Local organizations will reap the benefits from successful applications via the Local History Grants Program announced today by the Minister of the Arts Heidi Victoria.

 Congratulations to Shire of Nillumbik for its Nillumbik Heritage Boioklet update project and the Greensborough Historical Society for the production of a website.

Springthorpe Owners Corporation based in Bundoora on the border of Banyule and Darebin has also received successful funding for their heritage project.

Nillumbik Council Grants information session

Does your local history group need some extra funding? Each year, Shire of Nillumbik (and other councils) awards grants to sports, arts and cultural, youth and volunteer groups that want to plan and develop new programs for people living, working or playing in the Shire, and to budding athletes who compete at state level, or above. To help applicants apply for grant submissions, an information session will provide an overview of community grant categories and advice regarding selection criteria. Council highly recommends that all individuals or groups considering applying for grants attend an information session.
