Truth, Beauty & Utility Exhibtion

 

The new exhibtion from Heidelberg Historical Society has opened. Truth, Beauty & Utlity: the Arts & crafts movement in Heidelberg traces the Arts & Crafts Movement. From the sudden craze for Japanese-inspired decoration in the 1880s to the non-historical ‘Art Nouveau’ of 1900, to the rugged Californian bungalow of 1920—all as seen in our local Heidelberg and Ivanhoe area. Truth, Beauty & Utility is now open at the Heidelberg Historical Society Old Courthouse Museum, Jika Street Heidelberg and can be viewed on Sundays from 2 pm to 5 pm. Entry $5.00.

Eltham on display

Visit the Eltham District Historical Society exhibition at Eltham Library during June. The exhibition includes a photograph collection from the former Shire of Eltham from the 1980's illustrating people and places, including these lovely ladies enjoying a bite in the sunshine. Remembering '67 Exhibiton

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Heidelberg Historical Society a new exhibition has opened.  The local exhibition celebrates living in the City of Heidelberg in 1967. 50 years ago a number of local history groups were founded including the Shire of Eltham Historical Society now Eltham District Historical Society and Doncaster Templestowe Historical Society .  LaTrobe University Bundoora opened its doors to new students and further afield Prime Minister Harold Holt went missing after going for a swim at Portsea.  What are your memories of 1967?

The exhibition is open Sundays 2.00pm - 5.00pm until December 2017 at the Old Court House, Jika Street Heidelberg, adjacent to the Heidelberg Police Station

Pack up your troubles: Music and the Great War

The current exhibition running at the University of Melbourne’s Grainger Museum: “Pack Up Your Troubles : Musiic and the Great War”, highlights the music and musicians of the First World War. Among the ‘exhibits’ are items once belonging to a 21st Battalion bandsman from Diamond Creek, Herbert Godber. There’s his tiny diary, photos of the band in France and a Christmas card sent to his fiancee Ivy Partington back in Greensborough. Herbert Godber (1892-1980) enlisted in 1915 and returned to Diamond Creek in 1919. Listen to the sounds of the brass as you view the memorabilia, loaned by descendants of the Godber family.  The exhibition is on till December 23.  Visit  Grainger Museum at the University of Melbourne to learn more.

Exhibition recalls the Shire and City of Heidleberg

When the new brick court house in Jika Street, Heidelberg opened its doors in 1901, the Shire of Heidelberg had existed for 30 years. The Shire progressed so remarkably over the next 30 years that it was conferred with the status of a City.

The old court house is now the Museum of the Heidelberg HistoricalSociety, which is currently featuring an exhibition celebrating the 80th Anniversary of the proclamation of the City of Heidelberg.

Proclaimed in 1934, the City of Heidelberg had its beginnings in 1840 in the formation of the Heidelberg Road Trust. It was the first municipality to be formed in the Port Phillip District which was then still part of the Colony of New South Wales. A decade later the Colony of Victoria was gazetted and, in 1860, the Heidelberg Road District was proclaimed, taking over from the Trust. The Shire of Heidelberg came into existence in 1871.

Heidelberg Historical Society’s exhibition, ”Heidelberg District: Shire to City – 1871 to 1934  focuses on the civic development of the Shire of Heidelberg from the 1870s through to its proclamation as a City in 1934. This is revealed through photographs, subdivision plans, objects and other material sourced mainly from the Society’s collections.

The exhibition is on until 7 December 2014.

Heidelberg Historical Society Museum is located in the old court house, Jika Street, Heidelberg near the Burgundy Street shopping area. The exhibition is open to the public on Sundays from 2pm to 5pm, or by appointment for groups of 10 or more persons. Admission is $5 per person (aged over 16 years).

Burley Griffin Exhibition

2013 marks the centenary of Canberra. The original design was conceived by a distinguished Chicago architect and rendered on fabric panels by his talented architect wife.

The Heidelberg Historical Society is presenting an exhibition: Against the forces:  Walter Burley Griffin Marion Mahony Griffin, to honour this couple who designed our capital city and at one time lived in Eaglemont.  It pays tribute to the Canberra project and their other work which spanned three continents during the first half of the 20th Century.

Walter Burley Griffin (1876-1937) and Marion Mahony Griffin (1871-1961) practised at the margins of mainstream design and saw themselves as battling for the cause of modern architecture against the forces of reaction. Both their aesthetic and their views on how people should live have resonance in today’s society.

The exhibition includes photographs, maps, drawings, books and other material sourced from the collections of Heidelberg Historical Society and elsewhere. It is being held at the Heidelberg Historical Society Museum, old Courthouse, Jika street, Heidelberg open Sunday March 10 through every Sunday to November 2013.
