Plenty Centenary

Next weekend is the culmination of about 18 months of dedicated effort on the part of the Plenty Centenary – 2013 Steering Committee when the planned celebratory activities come together. An active program of events has been developed and should be of interest to all.

On Friday, 12 April at 7.30 pm at the Plenty Community Hall an Art/Photography exhibition with local artists presenting their works, including Ray MacMinn, who is a well known artist in the Diamond Valley Area, and well known photographer, Anita Norris.  We will be serving local wines from the Hills of Plenty and Cheese from Donnybrook. Some of these works will be offered for sale.

The Art/Photography exhibition will continue on Saturday 13^th April, and together with an historical display, with local historians who will be able to pass on the history of the newer residents, and give them an idea of what their property was used for prior to development.  We also have a display of craftwork and vintage car and farm machinery display, which includes a Stanley Steamer and a Detroit Electric in pristine condition. Plenty Valley Girl Guide District are also providing a display of Guiding activities and a sausage sizzle during the day.

Saturday Evening at 6.45 pm for 7.15 pm a significant event will occur for the first time in Plenty, with 10 CFA Brigades and several junior brigades joining in a ”Massive Torchlight Parade” marching down Yan Yean Road, from River Avenue to the Plenty War Memorial oval, accompanied by St John’s First Aid and the Victorian Police Band. Yan Yean Road will be closed for a short time during the time of the parade, and the parade can be watched all along its route. Come and Join us!

The CFA are dedicating the Torch Light Parade to the many fire fighters who have lost their lives protecting the community.   Plenty’s history is one of many bush fires and the Plenty CFA has been an integral part of the community for many, many years. Following the march there will be a Bonfire.

On Sunday, 14 April 2013, local historians will be conducting “talking circles” in the Plenty Hall from 10.00am and at 11.00am and an ANZAC Memorial Service will be held at the Plenty War Memorial Gates.  A Light Horse Reenactment Group will provide a Guard of Honour at the Service, together with a piper and bugler.  This ANZAC Service will be followed by a Centenary Luncheon to be held at the Plenty Tennis Club.

All in all, this Celebration promises to be a highlight in the history of Plenty in that for the first time all organisations in Plenty, together with Nillumbik Shire Council and Yarra Plenty Regional Library have joined together to form the Steering Committee to plan and conduct the event.

The event is free and everybody is welcome to all events.

Plenty Centenary Celebrations

The year 1913 is recognised as the beginning of the Plenty township. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of land in Plenty being opened up for subdivision, and to coincide with registration of the first land sales, the weekend of 12–14 April 2013 has been chosen to celebrate the occasion.

The focus of the celebrations is the „Pioneers of Plenty‟, our history past and present, and the contributions they have made.

The Plenty Historical Society Inc. are seeking interested Nillumbik residents and others to participate in the activities, and also to obtain names and addresses of former Plenty residents so they can be contacted about the event.

Pioneers of Plenty

As part of the Plenty Centenary celebrations in 2013, it is proposed to hold a “Back to Plenty and Plenty School Reunion”. The Plenty Historical Society Steering Committee wishes to collect names and addresses, telephone numbers, and if possible, email addresses of former Plenty Residents.
