Naming Places

Naming places is something Victorians are passionate about. Whether it's a street, suburb, school, stadium or shopping centre, names connect places to their local community.
In Victoria, the Geographic Place Names Act 1998 covers the naming of places and the registration of place names. The legislation encourages greater community involvement in the place naming process through the Guidelines for Geographic Names Victoria (October 2004). These guidelines set out the principles, policies and procedures for naming places and features.
Local councils are Victoria's main naming authorities, but anyone can initiate a proposal to name or rename a place or road. Names of significant places, for example The Twelve Apostles, are determined centrally by specially convened Geographic Place Names Advisory Committees.
