The Corner Store

The Corner Store is becoming a thing of the past, but memories from residents of Eltham will be invoked with a painting recently hung at Eltham Library.  The Corner Store by Ted Dalton was painted in oil about 1980 and has been identified as  the view of the old Burgoyne store looking south-east across Main Road, Eltham near the intersection with Bridge Street.
The late Ted Dalton was a member of the Diamond Valley Arts Society.  His profile on their website can be read here.
The painting is located on the south wall of the library and together with the local history collection will help to connect our residents to the history of Eltham Township.
The Library thanks Mrs Dalton for the donation of the painting and Eltham District Historical Society in facilitating this.

On this day - Eltham Library opened

On August 17, 1971, the Premier of Victoria - The Hon. R. J. Hamer opened the original Eltham Library in Main Road Eltham. The Library formed part of the Shire of Eltham Shire Offices building.

That building has since been demolished and Eltham’s current library building was built in 1994.

The photograph above shows Librarian - Miss Jean Truebridge and Cr. G. C. Dreverman with a copy of 'Pioneers and Painters' by Alan Marshall at the opening of the original Eltham Library on 17th August, 1971.

What are your memories of the old Eltham Library?
