Wikipedia Librarians at Work

#1Lib1Ref is an bi-annual global Wikipedia campaign that invites librarians to participate by improving articles in its online encyclopaedia by adding citations. A small band of Yarra Plenty Regional Library staff participated in the winter campaign, 10 May to 7 June 2020. This was the second time YPRL staff participated.

With training and support provided by Wikimedia Australia, seven staff signed on as editors. They created four new articles, edited 60 articles, added 22,600 words and added 327 references over this time. With a concentration on (but not limited to) improving local place names articles, articles were improved with additional citations from the Victorian Heritage Database. Some examples of improved articles include: Kangaroo Ground, Viewbank and Bears Castle.  New articles included Eltham District Historical Society and Banyule Homestead

YPRL is on Wikipedia

Did you know that Wikipedia’s online encyclopaedia is represented in 287 languages and contains more than 30 million articles? Volunteers from around the world contribute content or create new entries on a wide range of topics via continuous crowdsourcing. It is one of the most popular sites on the internet. Wikipedia can be considered a search engine its own right because of the immense breadth of subject matter it contains.
We are happy to launch the updated Yarra Plenty Regional Library article on Wikipedia today as Wikicommons also launches its #1lib1ref South campaign encouraging Librarians to add citations to Wikipedia.
