Epping RSL new home for Thomastown honour board and plaque

The Whittlesea Leader this week reports that the Epping RSL are now proud custodians of an almost 100 old honour board and plaque commemorating locals who served in World War One. After five years in storage, the heavy marble plaque was mounted in the Thomastown Methodist Church following World War 1. The Church was sold in 2003 and recent moves will soon see it being proudly displayed at the Epping RSL.

The board honours four soldiers from the Thomastown area who died in the War including Private Fred Dyer.

To research a World War One solider search the Roll of Honour at the Australian War memorial and digitised service records at the National Archives of Australia.

Celebrating Nillumbik Women

The Nillumbik Women's Network and Nillumbik Shire Council have recently launched their book "Celebrating Nillumbik Women". It was conceived "as a way of writing women in to our local history" according to the Foreward.

We have copies for loan and also available in our local history collections at Eltham and Diamond Valley libraries.

It would be terrific to see this project develop further and see more women in Nillumbik's local history being recognised.

Nillumbik Local History

Yarra Plenty Regional Library has been awarded a Local History Grant from the Public Records Office for our application : Diamond Valley Local History Digitisation Project.
The grant will preserve and present the story of the Former Shire of Diamond Valley and we will digitise, catalogue and make accessible an online collection of historical photographs in partnership with Nillumbik Historical Society.

We are the only public library to receive a grant.

Congratulations also to St Andrews/Queenstown Historical Society who have also recieved a grant.
