Griffin Diary and scrapbook online

Mount Eagle Estate and Glenard Estate in Eaglemont, Victoria were Australia's first "garden suburbs" designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin. The Griffins came to Australia after winning the competition to design the federal capital, Canberra.

"The Magic of America," a typescript of over 1,400 pages with approximately 650 accompanying illustrations, was written and compiled by Marion Mahony Griffin (1871-1961), architect, designer, delineator, and artist. In 1911 she married Walter Burley Griffin (1876-1937), architect, landscape designer, and city planner. Their architectural practice spanned almost four decades on three continents, and "The Magic of America" was meant, in part, to be a testament to their life and work together.

It has now been digitised and transcribed and with photographs and illustrations in now online

The best way to search the text is to download the single PDF file of all four Sections combined under the Supplementa section. This version may be searched using the search tool found in Adobe Reader. The PDF is 9.52 MB and took me about 10 minutes. References to Eaglemont start at page 396 of the document.

Birch Cottage

The Andrew Ross Museum in association with Parks Victoria has been busy over recent months researching and documenting Birch’s Cottage, a 100 year-old cottage built on a miner’s right on the old Kangaroo-Christmas Hills Road, seen as the last surviving example of its type.

The Museum is having an Open Day on Sunday 21 October at 2 pm. There will be an entertaining hour of audio-visual display, good conversation and light refreshment.

In 2008 the Victorian Government will encourage all Victorians to celebrate 100 years since most Victorian women gained the right to vote.
The right to vote is the cornerstone of modern democracy. Victorian women faceda long and protracted battle to gain the vote and equal representation in 1908, although Aboriginal and Torres Strait island women were not able to vote until the 1960s.

The Centenary of Suffrage Grants are for community organisations and women's groups to organsie events and initiatives throughout Victoria during 2008 that explore, celebrate and recognise this important milestone and its future significance.

Financial support is available from $2,000 to $10,000
