Newspapers for local history research

Newspapers are a wonderful source for information for local history researchers. They will often have an obscure piece of information not found anywhere else.

Yarra Plenty Regional Library holds local newspapers in each of our local history collections.

These include hard copies of
Diamond Valley News/Diamond Valley Leader 1974 - 2010 at Eltham and Diamond Valley Libraries

Heidelberg Leader at Ivanhoe Library and

Whittlesea News and Whittlesea Leader at Mill Park Library

The Evelyn Observer 1882-1918 is also held on microfilm at Ivanhoe, Diamond Valley and Mill Park Libraries.

"The Argus" 1848 - 1954 can be searched online at Australian Newspapers Beta

There is also an Argus Index 1870-1879

"The Age" is now available via Google News Archive Search

- not yet on Australian newspapers beta. It seems to go back to 1902. So this is good news and another great source for local history queries.

Some dates for The Northcote Leader can be accessed via the Darebin Historical Encyclopedia

Leader Community ePapers is a good online resource for recent newspapers.

The ANZ Reference Centre database is an excellent reference for more recent articles

This article Using newspapers effectively is a good introduction to newspaper research
