Around June 2019 The History Councils of New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia jointly adopted a statement about the Value of History:
Studying our past and telling our stories is critical to our sense of belonging, to our communities and to our shared future. History shapes our identities, engages us as citizens, creates inclusive communities, is part of our economic well-being, teaches us to think critically and creatively, inspires leaders and is the foundation of our future generations.
We believe in the value of history!
The ideas in this statement are supported by Victoria’s public libraries, including Yarra Plenty Regional Library who maintain, preserve and share local history collections and stories with online projects such as Wikinorthia: documenting life in the north, provide a range of programs for people to connect with their past such as National Family History Month and the RHSV History Week, (in 2020, now a month) often partnering with local history groups and other local organisations through programs such as the City of Whittlesea Cultural Heritage Program and more.
