Local History Month at Yarra Plenty


November is Local History Month at Yarra Plenty Regional Library.  Our events (in chronological order) include:
Eltham Library
Laughing Waters
Thursday 8 November
10.30am-11.30am

Laughing Waters Road is a secluded area of bushland in Eltham, and is the site of many rich stories in the history of the suburb. A new local history project will weave together the narratives of this special place.  ‘Laughing Waters Stories’ is a project supported by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities and Nillumbik Shire Council. Come along and learn about the fascinating history of Laughing Waters Road – its rich Wurundjeri past, the farming stories, the work of artists and its important role as part of the Yarra Valley Parklands.  Please join us to hear some of these stories, and share your own stories or memories of Laughing Waters.

Local historical newspapers and trove

Join Local and Family History Librarian Liz who will introduce researchers to the National Library of Australia’s treasure which is Trove and a tour of local historical newspapers online.


Mill Park Library
Mernda Bakery
Wed November 14

Originally built in 1892 this small boutique bakery in Mernda was reopened in Feb 2010 by Jonathan Hicks and Sue Ferguson and is now producing good old fashioned home made pies and pastries, cakes and sweets and is specializing in producing a small range of sourdough breads all cooked in the wood fired Scotch oven.
Hear about Jonathan and Sue's journey to breathe new life into this delightful café and its 19th Century setting.

Diamond Valley Library

Plenty Centenary
7.00 pm – 8.00 pm
Plenty will celebrate the centenary of its settlement in April 2013.  Come along and here about the history of the area and the plans for the forthcoming celebrations.
